Liam Atkin-Smith - Project Controls
I am currently a first year Project Controls apprentice through LSP. On a day-to-day basis I help with updating project plans for the project managers.
I opted to do an apprenticeship, at the age of 30, to better my learning and to provide myself with a career that I can progress through. I enjoy being able to learn whilst also earning a wage, whilst being able to engage in work that I never thought I would do.
Apprenticeships are suitable for anyone of any age, as it provides a balance between working and learning to give yourself a qualification at completion.
In my opinion apprenticeships are the perfect way for, not only, a younger person to get into work or if (like me) you want to change careers as no previous experience is required to apply, as you will be learning the job as you go. Apprenticeships are also a great way for continuous professional development, as there is no upper age limit.
Employers should offer apprenticeships as it generates a new work force, and when the time comes to roll off, they will know that they can have a fully qualified person who will be more than capable to fulfil the job roll, especially if it is in an area where they are struggling to recruit qualified or more experienced staff.
