How to Support Employees in the Workplace

During these challenging times it is more important than ever to ensure all employees feel supported at work. Each staff member needs to feel included, valued, and part of the team. With this in mind, here we are covering the best ways in which you can support your employees at work.

Regularly Check-in

Regular catch-ups can be beneficial to ensure everyone is in the loop and up-to-date at all times. Leaders should be providing regular feedback and support, and encouraging staff to speak up if they’re having problems. Keep in regular contact with your team to make sure they are coping well.

For example, you should check:

  • How they’re feeling

  • If they need any support with their workload

  • If they have the correct set up (if working from home)

Set up daily meetings, this could be face-to-face or virtually to take a short break and chat with colleagues. These meetings can help to keep everyone motivated and encourage discussions within in the team - this is proven to increase productivity!

Consider Wellbeing

In order to support your team it is essential to focus on their wellbeing. Encourage your staff members to achieve a healthy work-life balance by setting boundaries. For example, urge them to only check their emails and answer calls during work hours. It is also important that they take regular breaks during the day and book in annual leave throughout the year to take a well earned vacation.

Say ‘Thank you’

Every employee appreciates being recognised for their hard work and contribution to the success of the business. Let them know they are doing an amazing job. This could be a weekly email acknowledging the hard work of each team member. Doing this is sure to boost the morale and create a positive and engaged workforce.

Promote Personal Development

It is rare that employees want to do the same thing day after day for years to come. Everyone wants new challenges and an opportunity to grow within the business. It is a great idea to meet with your employees each year to talk about their career aspirations. From here you can create a growth plan which will cover what the employee would like to learn or improve on, and how they will achieve this. Staff are more motivated to excel in their work if they have a vision for their future growth and development in their role.

Appropriate Training

It is crucial that staff receive the appropriate training in order for them to carry out their day-to-day duties successfully. Training should be ongoing and not just during the induction process. Investing in employee learning guarantees they are knowledgeable in their role and can also help them to climb the career ladder, as mentioned above.

Morale

Employers should know what drives each employee and their individual performance. Each employee is motivated in different ways and employers should be aware of this to be able to create an engaged workforce with a deeper sense of loyalty for the organization.

Encourage Exercising

Not only does exercising make you feel great it also helps you de-stress and re-focus, which will in turn have a positive effect on employees. Whether it a walk round the block, chair yoga, a bike ride or run, taking some time to focus on your health is so important. Try introducing an exercise club to motivate staff and encourage them to share their achievements.

So, how have LSP tackled this?

To support our staff we have implemented a number of methods to ensure we all keep in regular contact and feel like valued members of the team.

  • Perkbox - Perkbox will provide staff members with hundreds of amazing discounts and offer access to further health and wellbeing support.

  • Friday Social Quiz - Each Friday the team meets (virtually) to catch up whilst completing a quiz.

  • Frequent Check-ins - This has become a huge part of our day-to-day routine, especially during remote working.

  • Morning Coffee and Catch-ups - We have set up a virtual Coffee Chat each morning for those who wish to attend. This is a great opportunity for the team to catch up on anything work related.
