Theme of the Month - Forced Marriage & So-Called Honour-Based Violence

A forced marriage happens when one or both individuals are made to marry without their free and informed consent. In many cases, individuals are subjected to physical, emotional, or psychological pressure to comply with family or societal expectations. While an arranged marriage involves the agreement of all parties, a forced marriage does not allow choice or autonomy.

Honour-based violence (HBV) refers to a range of harmful practices carried out to protect or restore the perceived honour of a family or community. It is often linked to patriarchal beliefs that prioritise collective reputation over individual freedom. Victims are punished for actions considered dishonourable, which can include:

  • Refusing an arranged or forced marriage.

  • Having relationships disapproved by the family or community.

  • Seeking divorce or separation.

  • Expressing sexual orientation or gender identity that challenges cultural norms.
