World Suicide Prevention Day

Each year on 10th September World Suicide Prevention Day takes place to raise awareness of suicide prevention.

On this day people from around the world come together with an aim to raise awareness of suicide and create a world where fewer people die of suicide.

2018 trends:

  • In 2018, in the UK and Republic of Ireland, more than 6,800 people died of suicide.

  • There has been a significant increase in suicide in the UK, the first time since 2013 – this appears to be driven by an increase in the male suicide rate.

  • In the UK, suicide rates among young people have been increasing in recent years. The suicide rate for young females is now at its highest rate on record.

  • In the UK men remain three times more likely to take their own lives than women, and in the Republic of Ireland four times more likely.

We all need to raise awareness and educate ourselves to be able to improve these figures!
