What is Climate Change?
Climate change is when the usual weather in a certain place has changed. This could be a change in the place’s usual temperature or how much rain it usually gets in a year.
Climate change is also a change in Earth’s climate. This could be a change in Earth’s usual temperature or even a change in where rain and snow usually fall on Earth.
What is causing Climate Change?
Different things can cause climate change. This can be the Earth’s distance from the sun, oceans can change, the sun can send out more or less energy and when a volcano erupts it can change the climate.
Scientists say that humans can change the climate too. Driving cars, heating/cooling houses and cooking food all take energy. We get energy by burning coal, oil and gas. However, burning these puts harmful gasses into the air which cause the air to heat up.
Simple ways you can help protect the Earth
• Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Cut down on what you throw away. Follow the three “R’s” to conserve natural resources and landfill space.
• Volunteer: Volunteer in your community to help with cleanups.
• Educate: Further your own education so you can help others understand the importance and value of our natural resources.
• Conserve water: The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that ends up in the ocean.
• Use long-lasting lightbulbs: Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Flip light switches off when you leave the room.
• Plant a tree: Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.
• Don’t send chemicals into our waterways: Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office.
• Bike and walk more: Drive less.
