Why take on an Apprentice now?

The government has now extended the incentives for employers to hire a new apprentice until 31st January 2022.

The incentive comes at a time that Apprenticeship numbers are at a low due to the impact of the pandemic. With multiple barriers and uncertainty, it is easy to see why businesses have put a pause on hiring apprentices however now is actually one of the best times to bring Apprentices into your business.

So why now?

1) Fill your skill gaps

With the UK’s skill gaps continuing to widen, the impact on business on not having the pipeline of skills is not going away. Key growth areas such as Construction, Digital and Engineering were already in high demand of skills and with the impact of Brexit and COVID it has meant that a pipeline of talent has been further disrupted. Recruiting an Apprentice now means that a young person can learn about your business and develop the skills you need to help boost growth, delivering your succession plan of talent for the future.

2) Bring a new and fresh perspective into your business

Apprentices bring fresh ideas and a different perspective to your business. Involving Apprentices in projects and initiatives means you can get a different voice in your team - helping you improve your product or service.

3) Invest in your local community

Young people in your community face the highest rate of unemployment than any other group. The impact of COVID has meant 2/3rd of job losses has been those aged under 25 years old. Investing in your local community supports loyalty to your business, economic development and has a long lasting positive social impact.

4) Develop young people into sustainable careers

Giving a young person that step up into a career is hugely rewarding. Support your current staff to mentor an apprentice and it helps not just the apprentice but your existing workforce, communication and culture. Be a trailblazer in your business by nurturing new talent and developing them in the values you have set as an organisation. That pipeline of talent will reduce recruitment costs and drive progression opportunities in your business.

5) The Incentives can support your workforce development

The incentives currently on offer can help you pay part of an apprentices salary. Pay for any training outside of their apprenticeship or help to pay for any equipment your apprentice may need. By investing in your workforce development you will see a large payback in terms of productivity, motivation, skills and culture in your business.
