Building Strong Futures: Hands-On Training for Construction Learners
Practical Surveying Experience
Practical experience is a crucial component of a successful career in construction. While theoretical knowledge lays the groundwork, hands-on training provides learners with the skills and confidence needed to excel in the industry.
Last week, we welcomed a group of Civil Engineering Technician learners to our Head Office to complete practical tasks as part of their Surveying in Construction unit.
LSP Construction Tutor, Peter, guided the learners through various construction tasks with the use of surveying equipment, this included:
Setting out building plots
Setting out drainage runs to design levels
Completing a closed traverse using a total station
Setting out a complex curve using deflection angles for determining a road centre line
Constructing batter rails for a road embankment
All setting out used measuring tapes to establish design positions, as well as using the total station to confirm.
Building the Future
To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we asked the learners their thoughts on how their apprenticeship has helped build their future and why they would recommend apprenticeships to others.
“My apprenticeship will enable me to continue onto Level 6, whilst gaining on the job experience. Along with this I am obtaining relevant knowledge which I can apply to my work.”
Thomas
“Apprenticeships allow you to gain industry experience simultaneously with education/theoretical lectures. My apprenticeship has helped me gain a wider understanding of Civil Engineering as a field/career. It has also meant I can progress onto a Degree.”
Matilda
“My apprenticeship has taught me a range of new skills and has allowed me to be able to progress onto the Level 6. With an apprenticeship you get on the job skills whilst also gaining a qualification. Great if you are a practical learner.”
Megan
“An apprenticeship offers lots of hands on lecturing and practical experience. It will allow me to progress onto a Degree and become a Chartered Engineer.”
Sean
“I would recommend my apprenticeship because it helps with understanding the theory aspect of being a Civil Engineer. It also gives me the option to progress onto a Degree”
Jordan
A huge thank you to all involved during the visit! We wish our learners the very best of luck throughout their apprenticeships and look forward to seeing them progress into their dream roles.
